Abstract
During the past 3 decades, certain cosmetic defect and diseases of the skin have been treated by highly technical procedure of dermabrasion, also known as surgical planing or wire brush surgery. Dermabrasion is an office procedures in which various thickness of skin are planed to depth necessary for removal of defects by use of highspeed, rotary, abrasive instruments. Within seven to ten days, healing without scarring occurs beneath a crust in an "open-to-air" manner. Kurtin first described this technique in 1953 as an improvement of the sandpaper treatment, and the technique employed today is essentially the same as that originally described by Kurtin. The indications for dermabrasion are acne and pock scars, but recently the planing provides a non-scarring method for the treatment of existing keratoses, as well as a purpose of rhytidectomy.

A total of 220 cases of facial dermabrasion performed during the last 10 years at Severance Hospital was reviewed and analysed upon age and sex distribution, scar depth and distribution, trial dermabrasion, post-operative changes(edema, discharge, crust and cracking), follow-up study and complications.
